B-2 Visa

OVERVIEW

The B-2 visa is the ideal entry pass for tourists interested in seeing the many splendorous sites of the U.S. The B-2 Visa is issued for pleasure trips for a limited period of time, and may also be granted to spouses, children and parents of B-1 Visa holders. The State Department defines "pleasure" as legitimate activities of a recreational character, including tourism, amusement, visits to friends and/or relatives, rest, medical treatment and activities of a social or service nature. The B-2 Visa can also be used by foreign students wishing to visit or tour U.S. schools prior to enrollment.

STEPS

Each applicant must submit their visa application form and other required documents at the U.S. Consulate, Consular Office, or U.S. Embassy with jurisdiction over their permanent residence.

DOCUMENTS

To apply for a B-2 Visa, each applicant must supply the following documents:

  1. A completed visa application Form DS-156;
  2. Form DS-157 is required in certain instances (Some Consulates require a DS-157 for all visa applicants.);
  3. One recent photograph 1 & 1/2 inches square (37mm x 37mm) of each applicant, with the entire face visible. The picture should be taken before a light background and without head covering;
  4. A passport, valid for travel to the United States for at least six months;
  5. Evidence showing the purpose of the applicant's trip;
  6. Evidence of non-immigrant intent (proof of the applicant's intention to leave the U.S. after a temporary visit);
  7. Evidence of the applicant's ability to support themselves during the trip or evidence of other financial support; and
  8. Additional documents and Visa Application Fees as determined by the U.S. Consulate or Embassy abroad.
